Submitted by Solacetech on July 31, 2008 - 9:38am."htttp://www.socialmedian.com, a new social news network that is
working on solving the information overload problem, opened its
website to the public today. The public launch follows a four month
invite-only alpha period with more than 4300 participants
from around the world. The socialmedian site is a public beta
and continues to be a work in progress. The company's model is
to ship new features and enhancements every other day in direct
response to user feedback."
(Louis, you are way too fast buddy...)In my short blogging career, today has to be one of my finest. I have no stock interest or developmental programing input with this site, yet I'm still excited! The great thing about Web2.0 is that birth is given almost everyday! A new this or a revamped that, it's exhausting yet fun. I know the ones who review companies full time get fatigued but they also have to be proud when a URL they talked about first does well. SocialMedian is one of these great sites. I think I found it by way Of either www.LouisGray.com or www.friendfeed.com . At present I only visit 3 sites for breaking info. Friendfeed, Techmeme and Socialmedian.
Here's the latest comment I wrote about them:
Sarah Lacy Gets It
Submitted by Solacetech on July 23, 2008 - 7:25pm.SarahLacy.com: Maybe Blogging Is Just a Loss-Leader?
If you look at SarahLacy.com as a business, the blog isn’t a profit center. It’s my low cost personal PR, lead generation, networking, advertising all rolled in one.
Yes I read Sarah Lacy's blog. No she doesn't just promote her book. Thankfully she's a real tech reporter with great content. She hit the nail on the head today with the excerpt above. Blogging is at it's best when it's used to promote what you really do. I had a podcast that I did every friday discussing the tech work I did during the week. It went well for a while until I realized my low numbers was because the audience I wanted to help never heard of a "Podcast". My music related podcast was a hit on Itunes (Hiphop Bizness) but I wanted to separate myself from that field...
Anyway, if you are a coder, start a blog. Build Websites? Blog about it. Internet company owner? Yes, blog it! Free or cheap promotion is the Web 2.0 way to go. Getting to know your customers this way will give you a direct channel to their needs and wants. Sarah gets it, do you?
Plurk!

Does www.plurk.com still exist? Let's check the site...Yeah it's still there. Soooo, I haven't been there since I signed up. Micro-bogging is very much alive with so many programs co-existing together. Honestly www.friendfeed.com was cool but quiet until www.twitter.com came back. I dropped twitter for a while thinking it wasn't needed, but articles are still popping up about the value of twitter in a business space. Is Twitter paying these guys to say that?*Checking Email* Do you think twittering still matters? Will PLURK last? Let me know...

BlogHer, Like Flies To Honey
Submitted by Solacetech on July 19, 2008 - 11:52pm.Women's tech conference draws Macy's, not Google | News - Digital Media - CNET News.com
"Here at the BlogHer 2008 conference, nearly 3,000 female bloggers are surrounded by the very mainstream-brand advertisers that the Internet media industry has clamored to attract for the last 10 years. It takes just a few moments to notice the stark difference in marketing pitches."
Well we've been wondering what would tip the online ad scales. Apparently the male dominated side of tech has been very unappealing to the major brands and the stats show it (see above). Then enters a Tech event for women bloggers and others related to technology. Now major consumer companies are tripping over themselves to advertise for BLOGHER.
I wounder if this is the leverage needed to make other online things go mainstream. Friendfeed and Twitter has a small percentage of women partipants. Could it be as they continue to grow in numbers and validate Web 2.0 more, the quicker it becomes mainstream? Interesting thought. If we go by marketing, most ads are aimed toward women and kids. Hmmmm...
Calacanis Gets Chatty, and I Like It!!!
Submitted by Solacetech on July 17, 2008 - 1:40am."Hello, my name is Jason. I'm a blogger at www.calacanis.com, and the founder of Silicon Alley Reporter, Weblogs, Inc., and Mahalo.com. This is my infrequent mailing list for my peeps."
First it was the "Fall out" on the 13th. Then "Start up" help on the 14th. Today it's about Hosting Conferences...This is great! Finally I have a valid reason for owning a gmail account! I will never have to worry about losing this precious info! Sorry, too many !!! ? Well as long as Jason Calacanis keeps the firehose open will be as long as I'll be ecstatic over the much needed how to's!
Web 2.0 = Small Business
Submitted by Solacetech on July 15, 2008 - 11:30pm.
It's strange. There used to be a time when the bigger the company and it's brand, the safer you feel. We would pour into appliance stores only, not "department stores, allowing the sales rep full reign with our wallets."Well if it's a ___ then it must be good." That was our reasoning.Of course now we realize that just like purebred dogs, certain "brands" break down or stop working at the exact same time, and the same part stops working on every item. This comes with the territory I suppose, but what about the internet?
It appears there is an online war out there with companies pitching for blogger's most precious commodity : Their Comments. This is a very touchy subject because if your blog doesn't have the latest and greatest, what are you?
I personally don't go for big brands anymore. I like the new guy with the latest technology and hunger to be the best. The fact that I can see Disqus creator Daniel Ha on friendfeed comforts me. My motto used to be."If we use a big company and something goes wrong, we can sue or threaten them to get results." Now it's "If we use a small business and something goes wrong, the minute I inform them I get a response (thanx Lijit)! I like that, how about you?
Disqus amongst yourselves
Submitted by Solacetech on July 13, 2008 - 12:52am.Finally, it's 2008 on my website! I've added Disqus so I can encourage more to comment here. What's so good about this? My site comments can be aggregated via rss and trackbacks to this site should be easier. Also it automagically adds video. So if you are brave enough, tell us how you feel in Techie-color!!!
