Did Your IT Dept. Ban TWITTER Yet?

Social Networking and Employees: Where Do You Draw the Line? [SearchEngineWatch]

"With the rise of social networking, employers are left wondering if or how the trend affects their bottom line. Many have decided that Facebook and MySpace in the workplace are not appropriate (for content or productivity reasons) and have banned the sites from being accessed at their offices."

Twitter is still safe but Youtube is banned at my job. They even jammed secret ninja proxy! This article makes a good point of how it's harder to monitor these activities with the mobile technology on our hips though. I remember jobs where the reps would whisper to each other about not working on their websites on the clock. Umm does thumbing a post from my cell count? :)

Is Tech work hard?

Is Tech work hard?, originally uploaded by Solacetech.

For some, going to school for Networking and Security was their second choice after years of doing something else. Some drop out because the harder they try the more they fail exams. The Saddest ones though are the ones who pass the classes but are either too afraid to get a tech job or too afraid to be promoted. The fear is of "messing something up". Fear won't pay back your student loan.

I've seen techs erase the client's data with a software upgrade thinking the customer already backed up their files. I've heard of the Help desk instructing a Network Admin how to rebuild a firewall, over the phone. I've walked into one too many Server rooms hot enough to lose weight in. My favorite phrase came from a prior manager, "I can stand physical mistakes, not mental mistakes". He wasn't talking to me in that case but he did let me go later.

Another favorite phrase" I'm so smart because I've made so many mistakes". That was from an old Tech...Yes Computer sciences is a challenging career and We'll all make mistakes, but the biggest mistake is not believing you can do the job you were trained and then hired to do...
